U-8's Winners at Redingensians RFC festival, retaining title won last year
Sunday 21 February 2010
On Sunday 21 February 2010 Camberley under-8’s set out to retain the title they had won last year at the same festival at under-7's, their first year of playing competitive rugby.
Camberleys first match against Farnham was always going to be a difficult one, and the cold, muddy conditions made it even harder. The Cam were keen to avenge their defeat to Farnham in the previous seasons Surrey A Festival at Dorking RFC, and having met Farnham frequently throughout last season matches had always been close. However after getting off to a flying start Cam soon found themselves with a strong lead at half time, and although Farnham scored quickly at the restart the Cam eventually won 7-1.
In the next two games against Bracknell Bulls and the hosts Redingensians Camberley again played some outstanding mature, flowing rugby which saw tries come fast and furious, winning both games 9-4 and 8-1. Some great individual tries were also matched by some brilliant support running and during these two games in particular it seemed whenever a Camberley player was tackled there were always 2 or 3 support runners on his shoulder, resulting in several great passages of play.
At this stage of the tournament 3 teams, Camberley, Bracknell “A” and Maidenhead were all undefeated and with all 3 teams still to play each other it was obvious the under-8’s competition would go to the wire. Bracknell and Maidenhead played out a hard fought draw at 6-6 before Camberley took the field again for their penultimate match against a strong Maidenhead side. Camped on their own try line for quite some time in the first half, some outstanding team work from the Cam defence saw the scores close at 3-2 at half time, with the Cam twice securing a turn over in their own half having made 7 successive tackles. Three unanswered tries in the second half resulted in yet another win at 6-2.
So the last game of the day was against Bracknell and with a win for either team enough to secure the silverware this was the tightest of all. Camberley quickly opened up a two try lead only to see a determined Bracknell side score two tries in succession and then a third, only to have this disallowed for a forward pass. The game continued to be close with each additional try scored being matched by the opposition until late in the 2nd half when Camberley scored a fantastic break away try, having secured a loose ball from deep within their own half. Less than a minute later the referee blew the final whistle! Final score 6-5 to the Cam, and they had retained their title as festival winners.
The Coaching team said “We’re so proud of the way the team played today, especially considering expectations were high following last years victory. To retain the title is simply fantastic – the whole squad put in a committed and passionate display of rugby, with some great individual tries and superb defensive teamwork leading to 36 tries being scored in 5 games, and only conceding 13. An awesome performance.”
Representing Camberley were: Will Calder, Toby Davis, Josh Fearnett, Oliver Hall, Mathew Jones, Harry Leonard, Oliver Martyn, Ben Mills, Jack Mellor, Ethan Pawadyira, Oliver Platt, Charlie Warner
Saturday 29th August - Presidents Day
We are delighted to report that on saturday August 29 at the Presidents Day, the U-8's played a short exhibition match before the annual season curtain-raiser, Camberley 1st XV against a Presidents select XV.
It has been many years since a team has been asked to do this, and was a massive honour for the squad - a recognition of their fantastic achievements last year in their first season of competitive rugby (Winners Redingensian festival, Plate Winners Dorking festival, Runners up London Irish festival).
The Match was played in front of a large crowd including the majority of the Clubs Senior Management and Officials, the Camberley 1st XV team and coaching staff and a number of representatives from other local teams. Once again the boys did not disappoint, putting in a skillful, competitive demonstration of tag rugby. It was a delight to see how far the boys had developed over the summer months in terms of speed and strength, and served as a mouth-watering marker as to what we can expect from them this coming season.
Well done to all the boys who played, and a massive thank you to the parents for making the boys available out of season.
Finally a reminder of last seasons triumphs !!!
London Irish festival - 1st March 2009

The B squad also took part in this tournament and their only defeat came at the hands of Camberley A's. Congratulations to both squads and coaches.
