Among the many games today, rugby is considered to be a one of the popular ones, enjoyed by different countries. Rugby has two basic variations: rugby league and rugby union.
This sport started in England, in a school named Rugby (this is where the game got its name). It is said that in 1823, a student of the said institution who was playing football took the ball and ran along with it. However, there is insufficient evidence that said event actually occurred. There is actually a particular type of rugby that is being played in a lot of schools in England during the mid-1800s. During the year 1870, the rules and regulations of rugby had been standardized and revised. In addition to that, the parts of the game that have been said to be violent were also eliminated. A standardized set of rules had been approved during the following year.
When the year 1980 came, a lot of members in the union expressed their disappointment and their frustration because they were not paid for joining the game. They also did not like their status as amateurs. Because of this, some of the union players who were very good and had a high profile status exchanged codes to rugby league in order for them to enjoy playing professional rugby full time. As the year 1995 arrived, the International Rugby Board had come to a decision in transforming the union version of the sport into a professional one. This truly implied that the players in the rugby union are already given the privilege and opportunity to create a career in rugby. This served to be way better than enjoying the game only during their vacant time while at the same time preserving the integrity of their individual jobs.
The Olympics had rugby during the earlier times. A lot of rugby teams have joined the Olympics and exerted much of their effort in order to bring home medals. These events happened during the years 1900, 1908, 1920, and 1924. During the 1920s, there was actually a movement that expressed its opposition against the team sports that are being included in the Olympics, and rugby is among those games that had been removed from the Olympics schedule. The game has been excluded from the Olympics for about more than 90 years. But for the coming 2016, it has been said that a variation of rugby will be included once again.
